Life is simple: kill to eat or run to live.
The wolves of the grassland, bears of the old wood, and gluttons of the mountains drift like seeds on the wind, the ache of a hollow belly driving them through lean and empty lands.
Their prey moves in the furtive hours of dawn and dusk, scratching out lives, always with a nose to the wind. They jump at shadows, cower in their dens, and sleep so light as to never dream.
That is how the world was made, just as the sun will leap over the eastern mountain and fall to the earth in the west.
All of the old legends glorify our ends, or to make peace with the truth: we live under the shadow of death.
But a new story is racing from tree to field and the lands in between. It’s burned like a sickness through the warrens and dens and hearts of those who must always run.
A great creature sought the sun as it slept and trapped the sun before it took flight. He took a part of it for himself and holds it captive in the shadow of the mountain. There, it answers to his call and kills any great hunter who comes to take his life.
But what a strange tale this is, as that’s only the beginning—
He calls those who would stop running, to those who would be more than meat waiting to be eaten. He claims we can be safe.
He promises there is more to life than death.
Rask and Quannaq
The bizarre rumor of a sanctuary free from predation has reached many animals, and not just those considered as prey. Two pine martens, Rask and Quannaq, follow the tales to the lake that lay in the shadow of mountain. While they have the long teeth of a flesh-eater, they know the constant fear of greater hunters who consider them only meat.
Convinced that there is more to this life than a mere transition into death, they go on toward the unknown, unsure if they will find welcome or ruin.
